Binaural Mixing in Dolby Atmos: The Psychoacoustic Principles
Talk by: Simon Gogerly
As spatial audio becomes more standard in our day to day listening habits, producers and mix-engineers are called on to have an in depth understanding of psychoacoustics principles to build a 3d world of sound that works for diverse audience without compromising the music. This session will outline the underpinning psychoacoustic principles of binaural audio with practical techniques for audio mixing in Dolby Atmos.
Grammy winning mix-engineer Simon Gogerly has worked with artists such as No Doubt, Gwen Stefani, U2, Massive Attack, Lamb, Andrea Corr and Paloma Faith and on 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, “T2 Trainspotting”, “Trance” and the National Theatre’s Frankenstein with Danny Boyle. He is currently the Course Leader for the University of Westminster’s MA Audio Production where he has led a shift into teaching new technologies and binaural mixing.

Talk by: Dr Lucy Ann Harrison
With a shift to the experience economy the role of the sound designer and audio engineer has changed from working in acoustically predictable spaces to having to build entire sound systems in unusual and challenging acoustics.
Through a case study of the 2025 production of Far Away in Ambika P3, this presentation will address approaches taken to build a fully immersive soundscape.

The Anatomy of Impact: Designing Cinematic Trailer Sounds
Talk by: Dr Susanne Grunewald
In trailer sound design, storytelling often lives in the space between tension and release: the breath before the hit, the pull into a transition, the movement that makes a cut feel inevitable. This session explores how cinematic trailer sounds can be built from both organic recordings and electronic sources, transforming small gestures, objects, textures and synthesised elements into large-scale sonic moments that support structure, emotional momentum and narrative energy.
